TELUS Teams up with Digi International to Offer Internet of Things Food-safety Solutions

Digi Honeycomb measures, monitors and manages food and equipment temperatures to preserve food quality and ensure food safety

TORONTO, ONTARIO–(Marketwired – Oct 11, 2016) – TELUS (TSX:T) (NYSE:T) has joined forces with Digi International, a leading global provider of machine-to-machine (M2M) and IoT connectivity products and services, to offer Canadian businesses an automated food-temperature monitoring solution – Digi Honeycomb™. The smart solution provides an easy-to-deploy and cost-effective service that wirelessly monitors the temperature of perishable goods.

New regulations require businesses to monitor, log and report on the temperature of the food items they transport and sell. Failure to do so can result in large fines and brand damage. Digi Honeycomb helps restaurants, grocers, convenience stores, warehouses and transportation companies prevent spoilage, reduce labor costs and better comply with food safety regulations. Operating 24/7, Digi Honeycomb alerts businesses of problems before they become critical; reducing inventory loss and preventing unsafe conditions.

“Temperature-controlled transportation and storage of perishable items is crucial to the reputation of any food-service brand. Nothing can be more damaging to a business than food-safety issues, however monitoring, logging and reporting temperatures can be extremely labour intensive,” said Michael Cihra, TELUS vice president of Internet of Things and Emerging Markets. “Digi Honeycomb automates the process; smart sensors provide real-time data that will help businesses prevent issues before they occur while making operations run more efficiently.”

Digi Honeycomb is a complete solution that encompasses front-of-house and back-of-house environments. The turn-key solution provides all the required hardware and software, including hand-held probes and wireless sensors that allow temperature data to be automatically collected, monitored, retrieved and integrated into existing back-office systems.

The easy-to-install wireless sensors can be placed anywhere food temperature monitoring is required and, to ensure food safety is continuously maintained, automatic alerts can be set for all types of temperatures (e.g. frozen, refrigerated, ambient, hot-holding, etc.) that trigger warnings whenever temperature exceptions occur.

“Being selected as a strategic partner by TELUS is exceptional recognition of our solution,” said Jamie Williams, vice president and general manager Cold Chain Solutions, Digi International. “Through TELUS, a vast number of food-service businesses will be able to quickly and cost effectively activate a state-of-the-art food-safety solution from one of Canada’s most trusted organizations.”

Digi Honeycomb is offered through the TELUS IoT Marketplace as a monthly billable service, meaning it can be deployed without a significant upfront capital expense.

Launched in December 2014, the IoT Marketplace is Canada’s first and largest portal for IoT solutions. The IoT Marketplace features a carefully curated catalogue that spans across industries and segments, allowing organizations to easily identify and adopt the right solutions for their business. By working with TELUS’ team of IoT Solution Specialists, customers can benefit from a dramatic reduction in the complexity and deployment time of IoT technologies, and can conveniently have associated charges appear directly on their TELUS bill.
