Samsung Elec to focus on connected home, office and car

Samsung Electronics Co. that was on a shopping spree of foreign technology startups last year to enhance its Internet of Things (IoT) business unveiled an ambitious plan to connect all home appliances, digital devices and cars through one single application.

Starting with flagship electronics and TV products this year, Samsung Electronics will complete the creation of the system that will allow users of its products to control them via “a single, integrate app by 2020,” said Yoon Boo-keun, president of Samsung Electronics’ consumer electronics division, at CES 2017 trade show in Las Vegas, U.S. on Wednesday (local time).

With such an app, people would be able to start car engines via a refrigerator while cooking at home, operate a robot vacuum cleaner via a smartphone app and check cars through a TV.

The world’s leading electronics maker is hoping the overseas technology entities that it has recently acquired help to speed up its plan to introduce connected home, office and car systems. Last year alone, the tech giant that lacks software power compared to multinational rivals such as Apple and Google took over artificial intelligence software Viv Labs Inc., cloud service provider Joyent Inc., and automotive electronics company Harman International Industries Inc.

As part of its efforts to expand IoT ecosystem, Samsung Electronics will also create $150 million worth of Samsung Next Fund that will be used to nurture promising start-ups, Yoon said.
