Product Review and Buyer’s Guide: Skybell Smart Doorbell

It took three versions, but SkyBell finally has a smart doorbell that is worth consideration. This is our product review and buyer’s guide for the SkyBell HD Wi-Fi Video Doorbell.

First of all, do not purchase this doorbell if you don’t have a hardwire connection available. It doesn’t have a “battery only” option, like the Ring. But installing it with existing wires is easy. Most customers say it takes no more than 10 minutes.

A new Android and iOS app walks the user through set up with the home wireless network. The hockey puck-sized doorbell records full HD video and captures still images in temperatures as high as 140 degrees and as low as -40 degrees. The night vision records in full color.

From the app, users can view a live stream of the front door and watch recorded footage on demand. The motion sensor will send an alert even if the doorbell isn’t pressed. And multiple users can be set up on one device.

SkyBell has a quiet mode that turns off the doorbell chime. The device is compatible with Amazon’s Alexa and the Nest Cam too.

The doorbell costs $199, which is significantly cheaper than the Ring Pro. There’s no additional charge to store and download the recorded clips either.

The video automatically records in 1080p, which requires a lot of bandwidth. There isn’t a way to opt out of push notifications from the app either.
