Amazon's Alexa now lets you order a ride from Lyft

The list of things Amazon’s Alexa can do for you, from shopping to delivering news information, continues to increase almost every month. The latest addition to its skill set is the ability to order a Lyft ride via voice.

Like many other functions, you simply start by calling the name Alexa, the software running on your Amazon Echo, and then say, “ask Lyft to call a ride.”

But that’s just one phrase available. You can also ask Alexa things like how much a Lyft to work will cost, direct it to tip your driver a certain amount and even verbally register a rating for your driver after your trip. The Alexa integration also works for Lyft Line, Lyft’s commuter ride sharing feature.

The functionality was developed during a hackathon earlier this year using the Lyft API and includes the ability to ask for estimated destination arrival times.

Although this will be a welcome update for Amazon Echo users who also use Lyft, the company is still basically playing catch up to Uber, which rolled out Amazon Echo functionality back in February.
