Home CCTV powered by connected home company Nest shows the man walking through the house carrying a microwave he plans to steal.
Plotting his escape, he walks over to the patio doors and draws the blinds.
After a few attempts, he opens the patio door – but his plan is foiled as the police pull up outside.
Frantically trying to escape, the man tries the front door too but sees his way is blocked.
He runs to the back door, but police catch him outside and he is arrested.
The clip ends showing the police clear the house and make sure it is safe again.
The clip was released by Nest ahead of the expected burglary rise over the Christmas period.
November and December report the highest number of home burglaries according to a report from Nest entitled ‘Burglary Britain’.
Their report revealed that almost a quarter of all burglaries saw the criminal enter through an unlocked door.
This is despite more than three-quarters of those surveyed believing their homes are generally secure.
Manchester was found to have the highest rate of reported burglaries at three times the national average.
Nest also discovered nearly a third of burglaries target outdoor buildings, sheds or storage spaces.
Speaking about this finding, Ex-Chief of Police Colin Port suggested lower-level security measures are making these buildings a prime target.
He said: “We may consider the risk to the building we actually live in but often have more lax security in place when it comes to sheds and garages.
“However, these buildings often contain high-value property that’s easy to sell-on, such as tools, making them a favourite with burglars.”
The footage of the burglar getting caught in the act by police comes after CCTV from a body camera shows a motorcyclist getting revenge after a car nearly knocked him off his bike.
