While we’ve all been busy worrying about whether robots will eventually take over the world, or debating whether we’re all living in the Matrix, one man has taken everyday technology that we already know and love and created an actual monster.
Developer Brad Kane managed to hack into his Alexa, the Amazon Echo speaker, and get it to speak through his Big Mouth Billy Bass.
And yes, it is as horrifying as it sounds:
The terrifying – but totally genius, we admit reluctantly – feat was most likely achieved through the Alexa Voice Service API, which lets developers embed the virtual companion in a third-party piece of hardware.
Although, we bet the developers behind that handy piece of design probably never thought that it would be used in this kind of way.
Kane shared the video on Facebook, where it was captioned simply “the future”, and you can watch as the fish answers the questions it’s asked – just as if Alexa had come to life in a creepy, scaly form.
Even more so considering it moves its mouth in time with the answers perfectly, and we’ve never wanted to hear a fish sing ‘Don’t Worry, Be Happy’ more.
While this may give us nightmares for the foreseeable future, there’s no denying it takes an inquisitive mind to think these things up in the first place, so who knows where else we’ll see Alexa pop up next.
We’re placing bets on one of those dancing Santa Clauses. ‘Tis the season, and all that.
