Software AG Acquires Cumulocity

The combination of the Software AG’s Digital Business Platform and Cumulocity’s Application and Device Management technology aims to reduce the complexity of the Internet of Things.

Software AG has added to its IoT portfolio with the acquisition of IoT connectivity software provider Cumulocity. The company offers IoT connectivity through its cloud-based IoT device management and application deployment platform, which now be embedded into Software AG’s IoT portfolio.

“The Internet of Things and Industry 4.0 are central growth markets for Software AG and for the entire technology sector,” said Software AG CEO Karl-Heinz Streibich. “With the acquisition of Cumulocity, we are strengthening our technological market leadership and facilitating our customers’ access to the Internet of Things. They benefit from an expanded, holistic product portfolio that combines the data from physical sensors with innovative, analytical software solutions.”

The two companies began a partnership in 2015 that allowed Software AG to integrate Cumulocity’s IoT Cloud Platform into its Digital Business Platform. The combination is designed to reduce the complexity of IoT device integration and deployment and allow enterprises to integrate IoT edge devices with their existing IT applications. Now the acquisition will see the IoT Cloud Platform join Software AG’s other core IoT software offerings, which include streaming analytics, on-site, cloud and hybrid-and IoT device integration, in-memory technology and edge device management.

The full portfolio is designed to enable enterprises to operate at the interface of human and artificial intelligence with applications for analyzing real-time, predictive and historical data. This is touted as improving decision-making. Other applications allow for remote monitoring and control of machines with production diagnostics.

The acquisition of Cumulocity comes on the heels of Software AG’s acquisition of artificial intelligence company Zementis in December 2016. The company has also entered IoT and Industry 4.0 alliances with Dell, Bosch, Huawei and Octo.

The terms of the Cumulocity deal were not disclosed.
