Amazon’s Alexa digital assistant keeps getting smarter and more useful, and it can now order food from Amazon Restaurants.

In its latest bid to boost Alexa’s appeal and functionality, Amazon has now upgraded its assistant with the ability to order food from Amazon Restaurants, aiming to make things easier and more convenient for customers.

The feature is available for Echo and Echo Dot owners who are also Amazon Prime members.

Alexa, Order From Amazon Restaurants

The Amazon Restaurants food delivery service is currently available in 20 cities and will likely expand its reach in the future. The new Alexa skill enables users to reorder from any restaurant available on the service simply by saying “Alexa, order from Amazon Restaurants.” The meal will arrive in one hour or less, with free delivery courtesy of Amazon.

“Customers now have a hands-free, hassle-free way to reorder any meal from Amazon Restaurants using their voice to get dinner on the table,” says Gus Lopez, Amazon Restaurants general manager. “We are excited to leverage the innovative Alexa technology and give Prime members another easy way for Amazon Restaurants to take care of dinnertime with no menu markups and free delivery in one hour or less.”

Only For Reordering

The caveat, however, is that this new Alexa skill works only with reordering, so customers can only order food that they’ve ordered at least once before. Once users tell Alexa they want to order something from Amazon Restaurants, the assistant will rear their order history and find the meal options available for reorder. The meal will be delivered to their default address.

Reordering is easy, as customers can ask Alexa to reorder something from Amazon Restaurants either by naming the restaurant or the type of food they want. For instance, users can tell Alexa to order sushi from Amazon Restaurants and the assistant will extract the sushi menus available for reorder.

No Hidden Fees Or Your Money Back

Amazon further highlights that Amazon Restaurants offers transparent pricing with no hidden fees or menu markups. Moreover, Amazon pledges to refund the price of an item if it’s more expensive than the regular price of the item listed on the restaurant’s online menu.

Amazon Restaurants

As a reminder, Amazon Restaurants launched back in 2015 as a meal delivery service and it’s currently available in 20 cities across the United States. The service lags far behind rivals such as GrubHub, however, so Amazon is trying to come up with new ways to attract customers and get some traction on the market for takeout restaurant meals.

The new Alexa integration could make Amazon Restaurants stand out from the crowd, as it now offers something that its rivals lack. Amazon Prime customers, meanwhile, get extra convenience with voice ordering (or at least reordering) through Alexa and getting free food delivery.

The latest option joins the thousands of other Alexa skills that connect users to virtually anything, and Amazon is just getting started. Alexa is gaining steam and becoming increasingly useful, aiming to aid in as many tasks as possible.
