INDIANAPOLIS — Your home is getting smarter – from thermostats to light bulbs, you can control your whole home from your smartphone – but all of that connectivity comes with more risk of getting hacked.
But all that connectivity comes with a risk.
They’re supposed to make things easier, but the more things you have connected to the internet in your home, the more chances hackers have to find a way to get into them.
The first step you can take to make sure your home is safe – is to make sure your WI-FI connection is secure. Pick a password that’s hard to guess, something with numbers and symbols. And don’t use something like your phone number or the word “password.”
Security experts say you should check your devices often for firmware or software updates. Making sure those are all up to date will make your chances of getting hacked smaller.
And tech experts say that reading about the device and making sure that you know what it does and doesn’t do before you connect to the network is one of the best ways to keep yourself and your home safe.
