The top reasons for implementing Internet of Things projects include increasing new business revenue sources, increasing customer and product knowledge, and reducing operating expenses. However, unlocking the power of IoT requires overcoming several challenges. To harness its value, businesses need efficient ways to store, process, and analyze IoT data. Speed, scalability and flexibility are all key issues, as well as integration and security.DBTA recently held a roundtable webinar on how best to derive business value from IoT featuring Kevin Petrie, senior director and technology evangelist at Attunity; Jamie Morgan senior solutions architect at HPE Security – Data Security; and Becky Hanenkrat consulting sales specialist at North America database and data warehousing at IBM. Morgan started off by explaining the challenges of securing the data lake and everything else across the enterprise. HPE Security provides advanced encryption, tokenization and key management. Businesses need to adhere to a vast amount of regulations in America and across the EU.Encryption can be used to mitigate the risks inherent in data processing, such as unauthorized disclosure, or access, to personal data. HPE’s strategy is to protect the data itself, eliminating all security from disparate systems. While securing the data is a high priority, understanding modern IoT requirements and using the right tools is just as important, Petrie explained. Modern IoT integration requirements include Ingesting/replicating data on demand, streaming in real-time, and loading to any target. But challenges include complex manual coding, high latency, high impact data transfer, and inconsistent platform support. Attunity Replicate can help with these issues, Petrie said. The platform doesn’t have manual coding or scripting, it automates end-to-end, and is optimized and configurable. The speed and ease as to how enterprises can get the information they need is also important, Hanenkrat pointed out. Digital businesses are disrupting industries and professions. IBM has been delivering Internet of Things solutions for a Smarter Planet since 2008, Hanekrat explained. If businesses were to build an Internet of Things database engine it would need to be agile, invisible, and resilient, she noted. An archived on-demand replay of this webinar is available here.
