Configure Cloud Cam with Amazon Key first, great duo with Kwik Set Convert Smart Lock
I bought the cloud Cam edition camera with Kwik Set Convert Smart lock on a deal and take me about 8 hours to installing it. I made mistake to install the lock first as a normal Kwik set convert lock with Kevo app, and wasted me about 4 hours, then I begin to setup Camera, then I notice how easy it is to set up both camera and lock, hope anyone out there reading this tip could save time, SETUP CAMERA first with AMAZON KEY. First I need to fix the hole position of the deadbolt tongue when the door close, it takes 2 hours. The deadbolt needs to be able to freely move from locked to unlocked status. My door have some issue, I have to buy a new hole plate and use a utility knife to dig the hole bigger and position the plate down from the original position for the door is sagging, and I need to lower the hole to factor in the sagging. I also moved the latch tongue hole plate position to back so it takes more force to close the door with latch and the latch tongue pull the door more flush against the frame. With both fixes, the deadbolt tongue is able to move freely in and out of deadbolt hole without any pull and lift of the door handle as originally it needs. Then you should do the camera install first, but I install the lock first and treat it a normal Kwik convert lock, installation is easy until you lock registration part, I installed Kevo app on all 3 phones in my whole family, none is able to register the lock. Then I began to install the camera, and I notice the camera is different from a normal Cloud Cam for it has a dongle on the power string close to the power plug, and software used to configure cloud cam is Amazon key app, not the normal Cloud Cam app. The installation will pair the cell phone to camera, and then the camera will pair to Kwik lock instead of pairing cell phone directly to lock. The Amazon Cloud Cam Key edition need to be the middleman, so the lock has to be managed by the Camera and the Camera is taking the leading role in this duo. As soon as I figure this out, the rest of the installation is very smooth, I am able to lock and unlock in 30 minutes from here. Then I add guest by inviting my wife and son from the phone list, and they are able to lock and unlock using text message. I also setup Amazon Key on my wife's cell phone and use my Amazon account to register the app, I have not figure out how to add a second master owner to Amazon key, for it ask me to pair device again if I do that, and the camera is already paired. Everything is great except the two master part which I take off 1 star.
I'm using this in conjunction with the Kwikset SmartCode 914 Keypad Smart Lock (Amazon Key Edition - Amazon Cloud Cam Required). Below is the review I wrote for the system package. Just a side note on the camera, it seems well built, it has night vision, and there is two-way audio.
My review is for the Kwikset SmartCode 914 Keypad Smart Lock (Amazon Key Edition - Amazon Cloud Cam Required). This may differ greatly from the capabilities of the regular 914. I've only had this connected for a couple weeks and have had several deliveries in-home. This is a great feature considering package theft these days. I've been able to watch most of the deliveries and the delivery personnel do not step foot inside. They carefully reach in with the package and set it on the floor. The door is then locked when they shut it. My friends think I am crazy for using such a service, but the delivery personnel get a onetime code and the camera is watching them.
I previously had the SmartCode 913 and this model is so much better because of the Cloud Cam integration and phone app. I previously didn't get the 914 because of the type of wireless it uses that requires a special hub (not WiFi). Luckily the Amazon Cloud Cam handles that. I am now able to remotely lock and unlock the door from anywhere. Alexa is also able to check the status of the lock and control it for me if I don't want to check my phone. Another benefit of the 914 over the 913 is dealing with access codes via the app and not having to remove screws and a panel from the deadbolt. That wasn't too bad, but it was not convenient. Sometime I do not even create codes for people - I just use the app to unlock and lock the door for them. I have a couple people that do work on my house from time to time and I trust them to be there when I am not home, but I prefer they do not have a code of their own.
I really, really like that the app will notify me each time the door is locked or unlocked and when particular people do so. I now know exactly what time my daughter unlocked the door!
I was looking for a relatively inexpensive method of providing keyless entry and being able to see my kids (or whomever) come home from school. For that purpose, this has worked flawlessly. The camera part is really easy to set up. Basically set it on a surface aimed at the door and plug it into the wall. Connect it to your home internet and done. Took me longer to unpack it. I like that I can see clips of the door opening or locking for up to 24 hours. I can d/l if I need them longer. I like that it records in the dark as well and it visible (though thoughts of me in my underwear letting the cat out at 3am being on cloud storage makes me shudder a bit). It also records sound and provides 'push to talk' type communication as well. All this is done via their app which I have secured with my phone security. The app also provides me an interface to create lock codes and distribute them via text message as well as remove lock codes (I paired this with Schlage Connect Smart Deadbolt)
I bought an Amazon key kit which included this cloud cam and I have been using this since 2017. It worked perfectly. Until recently when the camera malfunction and I could not get it to pair with the app , but now Amazon for some unexplained reason does not stock this camera anymore or it says that it's currently unavailable which it has been currently unavailable for a very long time. I cannot find a replacement camera that will work with the Amazon key so now I have a door lock that I have to open up manually or by the keypad and a useless broken camera that cannot be replaced. I have been told that the Amazon key can be added to the ring account for the garage but not for the garage + the front door. Only one form of opening at a time. If Amazon continues to promote the key delivery system to the front door they should at least have a camera that works with the system.
I'm one of those people who took a leap of faith to try the Amazon Key solution. I already have a Dropcam (now Nest Cam) for indoor video monitoring and a Kuna webcam porch light for outdoor video monitoring and really enjoy those products. After installing the camera, I noticed a lot of similarities with the software between the Amazon Cloud Cam software and Nest software.
Similarities: * Ability to turn off/on the camera manually * Ability to set home/away based on phone location * Ability to set motion sensitivity
Differences: * Cannot schedule camera to turn off/on like on Nest Cam * Cannot turn off status light like on Nest Cam * Cannot rotate image like on Nest Cam * Cannot change microphone sensitivity like on Nest Cam
In terms of video performance, the Cloud Cam provides very good images. The image quality is very smooth and the color reproduction is good. However, when compared to the Nest Cam, I would say that the Cloud Cam is not as sharp in image quality. I'm certain that the majority of consumers would still find it acceptable. The Cloud Cam is also slower when rendering video compared to the Nest Cam. There is a half second delay when comparing real-time motion and rendered video on the Cloud Cam. The Nest Cam has less than a quarter of a second of delay.
In terms of price, the Cloud Cam provides tremendous value at $120 compared to $200 for the Nest Cam. The Cloud Cam also provides 24 hours free recording whereas the Nest Cam only provides still images without a plan. Also, when you factor in 3 cameras, Nest charges $10/month for each device or $30 total. Amazon charges ONLY $7 TOTAL a month for all 3 cameras for a 7-day recording plan. IF YOU DO THE MATH, THAT'S $276 IN YEARLY SAVINGS! Yes, you lose some features mentioned above in Differences in the short run, but you save a lot in recurring monthly subscription costs in the long run.
Keep in mind that there are no other solutions out there that does what Amazon Key does so this makes the Cloud Cam unique and irreplaceable if you wish to have an option for Amazon in-home delivery service. I bought the Cloud Cam and Kwikset Convert not just for Amazon Key, but for also the added flexibility and security associated with wireless smart locks and WiFi security cameras.
